What Is a Travel Agent? (And Why You Might Actually Want One

When people hear “travel agent,” they sometimes picture something outdated.

But today’s travel advisor is very different.

A modern travel agent is part researcher, part strategist, and part problem-solver — helping travelers navigate an overwhelming number of options with confidence.

So what does a travel agent actually do

Access You Don’t See

As a travel advisor, I work under a host agency. That gives me access to the back-office systems of major travel suppliers — systems most consumers never see.

This includes access to:

  • Major hotel chains

  • Cruise lines

  • Tour companies

  • Event and excursion providers

  • Car rental companies

This access allows me to compare pricing, check real availability, and manage bookings efficiently — all in one place.

Do You Pay a Travel Agent?

In most cases, no.

Travel agents are paid commission by the supplier you book through.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize:

👉 Commission is already built into travel pricing.

When you book directly with a hotel or cruise line, that company keeps the commission.
When you book through a travel agent, the commission goes to the agency instead.

Your price does not increase.
The commission already exists — it just changes who receives it.

What a Travel Agent Actually Does for You

A travel agent doesn’t just “click book.”

I can:

  • Research destinations based on your travel style

  • Compare cruise lines, hotels, and tour operators

  • Price out multiple options

  • Book and manage reservations

  • Assist with changes or issues if something goes sideways

  • Share real-world travel tips from personal experience

It’s not just about booking — it’s about guidance and advocacy.

Professional travel agents complete supplier-specific training to better understand the products they sell.

My training includes cruise lines such as:

  • Carnival Cruise Line

  • Royal Caribbean International

  • Celebrity Cruises

(Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are owned by the same parent company.)

I’ve also completed hotel brand training with:

  • Marriott International

  • Hyatt Hotels Corporation

This training helps me understand brand differences, room categories, perks, and which options fit different travelers best

Hosted Group Travel Experiences

In addition to individual trips, I also host group travel experiences.

Hosted group travel includes:

  • Curated itineraries

  • Built-in activities and excursions

  • The ability to explore independently

  • A dedicated host traveling with the group

Group trips are ideal for travelers who want community, structure, and professional planning — without the stress of organizing everything themselves.

Is a Travel Agent Right for You?

You might benefit from working with a travel advisor if:

  • You don’t want to spend hours researching

  • You’re unsure which cruise line or destination fits you

  • You want help comparing options and pricing

  • You value having a real person to contact if issues arise

  • You’re planning a cruise, international trip, or group experience

Travel today offers endless choices. A travel agent helps narrow those choices into the right ones for you
